Definitions of career readiness

There are a plethora of career readiness definitions out there—Idaho as a state has not adopted one, although many states have. Let's continue to share definitions and so that we can evolve our own shared understanding/definition for the PTECH network.

Here's a definition that Deb found:

Career readiness involves three major skill areascore academic skills and the ability to apply those skills to concrete situations in order to function in the workplace and in routine daily activities; employability skills that are essential in any career area; and technical, job-specific skills related to a specific career pathway.

The IDEO team has been researching professional technical programs in other states, specifically Washington, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Washington State has students build portfolios that exhibit skills in:

  • academic development
  • career development
  • personal/social development

As you come across other definitions feel free to post them in the comments or add them to the blog.
